Why does good treatment on the site of pain keep relapsing?
Whether it’s a hamstring that won’t settle or a neck that keeps sliding right, treating the region that hurts often brings only temporary relief — because the source of the problem may be somewhere else entirely.
Treat the site of pain
Directing manual therapy and exercise at the painful region — hamstring, low back, hip, knee, or neck — and hoping local techniques hold, only to watch symptoms gradually return.
Find the primary driver
Using whole-body reasoning to identify the region actually driving the patient’s pain — often far from the symptom itself — so treatment creates lasting, meaningful change.
Watch the driver hunt unfold
Follow how a pain-free region becomes the primary driver of symptoms elsewhere — the kind of reasoning you can’t get from a textbook, played out on real patients.
Her expertise, on real cases
See LJ apply her clinical thinking to patients presented by soon-to-be Certified Practitioners — the kind of input Series Grads say transformed their results.
From hamstring to neck
Two very different presentations — lower-limb and cervical — show how ConnectTherapy™ traces distal pain back to its true source in the kinetic chain.
What you’ll work through
A 120-minute recorded session — two real patient case studies, presented by soon-to-be Certified ConnectTherapy™ Practitioners Jonathan Krebs and Lisa Ingimundarson, with LJ’s live clinical input.
A military athlete’s return to pain-free sport
A Certified ConnectTherapy™ Practitioner shares a clinical success story — where ConnectTherapy™ and the Thoracic Ring Approach™ resolved a case that kept relapsing.
- The presentation: a military special forces member with chronic tension in the lumbar spine and hips, plus recent acute hamstring and knee pain.
- Why it kept coming back: previous orthopedic manual therapy worked well initially, but symptoms gradually returned — limiting running and soccer.
- Finding the driver: how ConnectTherapy™ reasoning looked beyond the site of pain to the primary driver in the kinetic chain.
- The outcome: the pathway that returned this patient to pain-free sport.
A challenging chronic neck pain case
The treating therapist brings a live challenge to LJ — a case where the meaningful pain has improved, but a key inter-regional relationship hasn’t.
- The presentation: a patient with chronic neck pain whose meaningful symptoms have improved with treatment.
- The sticking point: the head-over-thorax relationship remains strongly right-shifted despite treating the full Driver Profile.
- The full Driver Profile: a Primary CoDriver between a TriDriver (R3/4 and R7/6) with the R glenohumeral joint, and a CoDriver of the R knee and R foot/ankle.
- LJ’s input: where to look next, and how to progress a patient when the obvious drivers have already been addressed.
See the models “in action”
Short and sweet: a 120-minute recorded session you can watch from the comfort of your own space, anywhere in the world.
- Two real cases: both presented by soon-to-be Certified ConnectTherapy™ Practitioners Jonathan Krebs and Lisa Ingimundarson, from their own clinical practice.
- LJ, on the case: her clinical expertise applied to real patients — where it matters most, in the clinic.
- Recorded & on demand: gain access to LJ and her reasoning from anywhere in the world, on your own schedule.
- Inspired by the Refresher: born from our Series Grad refresher calls, where practitioners have found real success applying LJ’s input.
Reasoning you can apply on Monday
Grand Rounds is about seeing driver-based reasoning play out on real patients — then bringing it straight into your own clinic.
- The models in action: watch ConnectTherapy™ and the Thoracic Ring Approach™ used on real, complex presentations.
- Driver thinking: how a pain-free region can drive symptoms elsewhere — from hamstring and knee to neck.
- Progressing tough cases: what to do when good treatment stalls and the obvious drivers are already handled.
- Sharper clinical reasoning: the process that helps you decide what’s important and what to focus your treatment on.

Dr. LJ Lee
LJ is a physiotherapy graduate and Wesbrook Scholar (1996) from the University of British Columbia, Canada. Her passion for movement, rooted in a competitive figure skating background, led her to pursue advanced training, becoming a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physiotherapy (FCAMPT) in 1999 and certifying in Intramuscular Stimulation (CGIMS) in 2001. Her clinical interest in how the thorax drives whole-body dysfunction and pain eventually led her to complete a PhD at the University of Queensland in 2013.
Over her career, LJ developed highly influential clinical frameworks based on finding the “primary driver” of a patient’s pain. She created the Thoracic Ring Approach™ to address motor control of the thorax, and her assessment framework, Meaningful Task Analysis (2008), became a core feature of both the Integrated Systems Model for Pain and Disability (2010) and ConnectTherapy™ (2014). These models allow clinicians to determine when a pain-free but dysfunctional region is the actual cause of pain elsewhere in the body.
An active researcher and educator, LJ is an Associate Editor for the British Journal of Sports Medicine and holds academic roles with McMaster University and the University of Melbourne. She mentors a team at her clinic, Synergy Physiotherapy + Pilates in North Vancouver, Canada. Inspired by the body’s capacity to heal, LJ loves creating supportive learning environments where clinicians can challenge their clinical reasoning and see movement in a more connected way.
